Ms. 957 : A collection of 177 pieces for solo violin, Edinburgh, ca. 1750-60, v.1 / [microform] : [Edinburgh, ca. 1750-60, v.1, McGibbon manuscript] / [Arcangelo Corelli ; William McGibbon ; Charles McLean].

"Manuscript 957, a miscellany of dances, Scottish tunes, popular melodies, original music by Scottish composers, and Italian violin concerti, includes 11 "graced" versions of slow movements from Corelli's Op. 5 attributed to William McGibbon, and 6 sets of variations for fast dance movements from Op. 5 attributed to McGibbon and Charles McLean. Principal hand of MS 957 I attribute to David Young (c.1707-c1770), Scottish writing master, violinist and important collector of Scottish tunes active in Edinburgh and Aberdeen on the basis of a comparison of the handwriting in the manuscript with that preserved in his McFarlane and Drummond Castle MSS."--C.f. L. Chisholm, electronic communication, 27 May 2010. "New source of ornaments for Corelli's Op. 5. -- Scottish manuscript in a hand identified as belonging to David Young (c.1710-c.1770), a writing master, violinist, and important collector of Scottish tunes active in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. The contents of the ms. include fiddle tunes and Italian concerti as well as the Corelli ornaments. In all, there are 11 slow movements from Op. 5 treated to 'free' ornamentation. Young attributes all of these to William McGibbon. There are also variation sets for 4 fast movements, attributed to McGibbon and Charles McLean."--U. of California.
